When Amber joined Fortem & Mode earlier this year, she was already passionate about beauty, working as a lash technician. But since stepping into beauty retail, she’s quickly made her mark. Starting out with NARS Cosmetics through Fortem & Mode, her natural talent for customer connection and product expertise soon led to a permanent position at the NARS counter in Boots Braehead.

We caught up with Amber to hear how her journey into beauty retail began, and how working with Fortem & Mode has helped her grow.

Taking the First Step

For Amber, beauty has always been more than just a job. It’s something she’s loved for years.

“I was a lash tech before joining Fortem & Mode,” she says. “I was already in the beauty industry. Applying for the agency gave me even more of a foot in the door.”

That step opened new opportunities, including her first experience working with NARS.

“I was working with NARS through the agency first,” Amber explains. “The boutique really liked me and actually asked Fortem & Mode if I could stay on. I’ve been there since the store opened, got trained by the team, learned so much product knowledge, and when a permanent role became available, I applied and got it because of that experience.”

Amber’s success hasn’t come without its challenges, but the support she’s received from Fortem & Mode has made all the difference.

“It’s been amazing, honestly. Genna has been such a great help – really understanding and helpful. Her guidance, support, and positive energy have made such a lasting impact on me. Loving What She Does

What makes her job special is the connection she builds with customers.

“Every customer has a different story and a different reason why they want to use makeup. You get to meet so many amazing people. I’m used to girls coming in feeling insecure or not happy about themselves, and then after a chat or a bit of makeup, they leave so much happier. That’s the best feeling.”

That same passion shines through in how she approaches every shift.

“I always come in a bit early, set up my products and get everything ready. That way, I can grab what I need quickly and keep things running smoothly. It’s all about multitasking and being prepared.”

Advice for Aspiring Consultants

For anyone thinking about taking the leap into beauty retail, Amber’s message is simple:

“I would honestly say: do it. It’s probably the best job you’ll have if you’re passionate about beauty. Something you actually look forward to. You meet new people, make new friends – it’s such a good experience overall.”

Her key to success? “Be like a sponge. Absorb all the information you’re given, and then use it when you’re with customers in a way that makes sense to them.”

Looking Ahead

Amber’s ambition doesn’t stop at the counter.

“This past year with Fortem & Mode has helped me grow so much. I’ve learned to adapt to new settings, build my skills, and develop real confidence in my work.”

“Right now, I’m a makeup artist, but in the future, I’d love to move up – maybe into management or even HR. I just want to keep building and progressing.”
